The first time I tried these brownies was at my cousin’s house. When she first told me that she made black bean brownies, I was shocked. What?! What in the world are black bean brownies? They surely don’t sound delicious. My cousin then explained to me that when she made it the day before it looked like black tar lol.. However, the most important thing she mentioned was that though it may look and sound disgusting, it tasted great! Doubtful, I tried it and boy was she right. It was so delicious that I thought it tasted even better than regular brownies. Plus the black beans makes it healthy unlike regular brownies.

I decided to make these for church because my mom was in charge with snacks for Friday night so for one of her snacks she made red bean soup. She wanted to get rid of the bag of black beans lying in the house so she decided that she was going to incorporate it in the red bean soup. However, black beans in red bean soup is a horrible combination. So, remembering the delicious black bean brownies my cousin made, I suggested to my mom that I would make black bean brownies. She was super unsure and hesitant that it would turn out disgusting, but to her surprise it tasted great. At church, so many people complimented me and said it tasted just like regular brownies. This started my path to making black bean brownies for my family and friends because it’s super healthy and delicious.

Before I used to add oats in black bean brownies because most recipes include oats. However, I always wondered, what if I take the oats out and just make it using only black beans? I tried that many times and I realized that the oats are a super important staple for black beans because it gives it texture and chewiness.

As I mentioned, these black bean brownies are quite different from other black bean brownie recipes because they are oat free. Also an added bonus to these brownies are that they are oat and wheat free, for those who are allergic to oats or wheat. Though they may be oat free, don’t worry, because it still has the delicious fudgy texture of a brownie.

Let it cool for at least 1 hour before serving. I personally like to preserve it in the fridge because it becomes more fudgy, stays together better, and tastes better cold. But it’s up to you! Enjoy!
